Baselworld 2011: The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona watch
home  lifestyle | admin
The new Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona is the perfect distillation of sportiness, technology and refinement. Launched in 1963, the Cosmograph Daytona is closely linked to speed and motoring. Its chronograph movement allows short periods of elapsed time to be measured to within 1,8 th of a second, and the tachymetric scale on the bezel enables the instant reading of speed over a given distance. Embraced by car racing enthusiasts for its exceptional performance, reliability and readability, this lauded chronograph carries in red letters on its dial the name ‘Daytona’, one of the world’s most famous motor racing circuits.
This year’s version of the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona exhibits Rolex’s usual state-of-the-art technology while paying homage to the watch’s august heritage. The black bezel is reminiscent of the 1965 model, while the graduation on the Cerachrom (new for 2011 on this model) bezel offers excellent readability and is obtained by the deposition of a fine layer of pink gold. Note the engraved numerals on the bezel. Rolex uses an entirely new technique for this (see specifications below).
This high-precision chronograph is driven by the calibre 4130, a movement with a entirely designed and manufactured by Rolex and already in service in previous Daytona models. The new model’s sophisticated aesthetics are underscored by the exquisite materials used in its construction. The Oyster case is wrought from18 ct Everose gold, and the comfortable strap in black alligator leather comes with an 18 ct Everose gold folding clasp and safety catch.
