When Jean Tobler passed his chocolate factory to his son Theodor, we’re sure he had no idea that his son would create the Toblerone, a confectionary treat that would be a favorite around the world. Instantly recognizable, the golden triangular-shaped box is enough to send me into a chocolate frenzy.

In 1908, Theodor Tobler, along with his cousin Emil Baumann invented a unique triangular prism-shaped chocolate in his Bern, Switzerland factory that still to this day makes our mouths water. The delectable chocolate gets its name from a combination of the Chocolatier’s name, “Tobler“, and “Torrone,” which means honey and almond nougat in Italian.

Rumor has it that the Toblerone’s shape was inspired by the peaks of the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps, and its logo, with a bear hidden in the Matterhorn Mountains, pays tribute to Tobler’s Swiss hometown (Bern means bear in German). One bite into this nougat-filled treasure conjures up images of past Swiss ski trips, and instantly brings me back to nights in the ski lodge by the fire with a cup of hot cocoa and a few Toblerone peaks.

Having recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, my beloved Toblerone is now offered in a variety of flavors. From the original Swiss Chocolate with honey and almond nougat, to the newer dark chocolate, white chocolate, fruit & nut, and Snowtops (milk chocolate topped with white chocolate,) there’s a Toblerone for every season and every event! And with sizes going up to 4.5kg, there’s always enough to share.
