Yesterday December 15, 2009 was an historical moment; indeed, the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner took to the sky for the first time, ushering a new era in air travel as it departed before an estimated crowd of more than 12,000 employees and VIP guests at Paine Field in Everett, Washington. The Dreamliner, painted with Boeing’s blue and white logo, took off from Paine Field adjacent to its factory in Everett, Wash., 48 kilometres north of Seattle and followed a route over the east end of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The aircraft landed back to Boeing Field in Seattle, its home for the rest of its flight-test period.
The newest member of the Boeing family of commercial jetliners, shown here landing at Seattle’s Boeing Field, flew for approximately 3-hour, 6-minute landing at 1:33 p.m. local time.
The flight marks the beginning of a flight-test program that eventually will see six airplanes flying nearly around the clock and around the globe, leading to the airplane’s first delivery in fourth-quarter 2010.
